Saanya R. (/ˈsɑːn.jə/; born 4 June 2002) is an Indian psychology student, cinephile, competitive Valorant player, and trainee vocalist. She was born in Bengaluru, Karnataka, to Rajendra and Vasanthi, and has lived in Bangalore her entire life.
Friends describe her variously: Inishaa offers “unhinged, communist, absolute sweetheart”, Ananya prefers “Little Miss Enchanting”, Esha settles on “Chatpata. Rawr. Oop.”, Darsan, with extra vowels, lands on “Cinephile, Gamer, Singaaaaaaaaa”, and Spandana sums her up as “Dramatic, Gorgeous, Always Correct”. These accounts are widely held to be individually accurate.
Education
Saanya completed her undergraduate studies at St Joseph’s University in Bangalore between 2020 and 2023. In September 2024 she began a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, where she remains enrolled. Her current focus is child psychology, in particular play therapy, on which she is presently single-minded. A small whiteboardin her bedroom, by Spandana’s account, currently carries statistics formulas.
Personal life
Saanya plays a lot of Valorant, where she mains Omen and Jett. Her flatmate Inishaa calls her “hands down” the best gamer in the house, and “better than she lets on” in general.
She is a serious film enthusiast, well-acquainted with the work of several internationally regarded directors. Her favourite film is the iconic Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), a position she will defend. Her favourite anime is Attack on Titan.
In music, Saanya is currently in a sustained Michael Jackson phase. Taylor Swift is a regular fixture in the rotation. She is also taking voice lessons; Darsan reports her singing to be “mad good, it’s not even funny”.
Her housemates consider her exceptionally considerate. Inishaa recalls one night when Saanya came home at midnight and realised she had forgotten her keys; rather than wake Inishaa, who had a 6 a.m. flight, Saanya travelled across Bangalore to a friend’s house for the spare. Inishaa also describes her, at home, as “a terrible sous chef but a great DJ when you’re cooking”.
Her go-to restaurant is Chung Wah, a Bangalore institution. Her favourite food more generally is “anything her grandmother makes” — a category corroborated by visitors to the family home in Banashankari, where her ajji’s cooking is held to be definitive.
Persona
Saanya’s presence takes some getting used to. Ananya needed “a solid semester and a half” before she could make eye contact with her without “glitching”. Saanya is also credited with introducing several turns of phrase into common use within her social circle.
Darsan credits her with the ability to “convince you that life really ain’t that serious” — a tendency widely considered net-positive.
Spandana, who counts Saanya among the “most lovable people” she has known, also credits her with an unusual ability to make you side with her in any argument. The same source has, on the record, called Saanya “so gundu”. On one occasion, after a drink or two, Saanya texted Spandana: “I’m so sorry [you’re] smart, but also so dumb” — a remark Spandana has chosen to take as a compliment.
Selected works
Unpublished but widely admired.
- A live presentation on “the ABCs of horror films”. Ananya, in the audience, recalls it as “the embodiment of passion” and “a flow state, sharing her love out to the world—so thoroughly, so effortlessly, so vulnerably, so determinedly”.
- A homemade Jeopardy night, hosted with full commitment to the format. Esha has formally requested a sequel.
- An early departure from the last day of APD with Darsan, leaving at 11:30 in place of the scheduled 3 p.m. In a reversal of usual roles, Saanya was the stressed one and Darsan the calming one.
